Edith is a highly sentimental woman in the story " Diary of a young girl".

She fails to give any emotional support to her daughters because she lacks inner feelings. Her daughter feels that she is uncaring and cold hearted and is unable to show her love towards them. She comes from a wealthy family and has spent most of her life in Germany. In terms of her mothering skills, she is somewhat of a disappointment to Anne, who would prefer her to be more affectionate and accepting. A peacemaker, she is the voice of reason during adult fights in the annex. After the residents are captured and her daughters are sent to the Belsen camp, she is left to die at Auschwitz.

She never developed a relationship with her daughter that most of the mother and daughter have. But later when her daughter Anne gets older she realizes that her mother could not develop feelings and emotional support because of the confinements and situations. They lack time and surroundings to forge a mother daughter relationship.
