Explanation:

Add few drops of solution from all three test tubes on the red litmus paper separately. The solution which turns red litmus to blue contains basic solution. Use this blue litmus paper to test the solutions in other two test tubes. The solution from the test tube which turns blue litmus paper to red will be the acidic solution and solution of the test tube which do not change either red or blue litmus paper contain water.

Given :

  • Three test tubes with acidic solution, basic solution and distilled water separately.
  • A piece of red litmus paper.

Answer :

  • Dip the red litmus paper turn-by-turn into the three test tubes. The solution which turns red litmus paper blue is a basic solution.

  • Remove the test tube containing basic solution. Now, put the litmus paper which has turned blue, turned by turned, in the two remaining test tubes. The solution which turns blue litmus paper red is an acidic solution.

  • The solution which has no effect on litmus paper is neutral and hence, it will be distilled water.

Therefore, We could easily detect the three different kind of solutions using only the red litmus paper.
