firstly You should know what does actually a magnitude mean ?
Any physical quantites like Distance , displacement , speed , velocity , acceleration , force etc have magnitude...
Magnitude just a number here...when we talk about the magnitude of any physical quantity , we only consider its value or scale or size or number except DIRECTION...
For example : duration of a class in a school 1 Hr...
here
=> 1 is the magnitude
=> Hour is the Unit
=>1Hr. is the Physical quantity TIME
Another Example : A person walk 5 km towards EAST.
Here
=> 5 is the magnitude of displacement.
=> km is the unit
=> Towards East is the Direction
=> Physical quantity - Displacement
If you add the the direction ( towards east ) with the magnitude it becomes displacenent...And if you consider or take only magnitude i.e, 5 km only , it is what we call magnitude of displacement and also called DISTANCE...
Hope this help...

Magnitude of displacement' is a technical way of saying 'distance, as measured directly between the start point and the end point'.As it includes no directional information it is a 'scalar' quantity rather than a 'vector'.Example, imagine two friends live on opposite sides of a lake. Bill intends to visit Ben. To drive around the edge of the lake is a journey of 20km. To row directly across is a journey of 2km. He doesn't feel like rowing today, so he drives the 20km - but the magnitude of his displacement is still 2km.This example is constrained to two dimensions. The same principle applies in three dimensions - that is, the magnitude of the displacement is the shortest distance between the two points.It gets more complicated when you start trying to measure things like displacement on a globe, as in navigation. It gets messy because two-dimensional rules are being applied to a three-dimensional surface. But that's another story that others are better able to tell.
Hope it helps...
