Identifying oxydising agents

↪ Oxidation is a reaction which involves the loss of electrons .

Oxidizing agent is a substance which results in oxidation by accepting electrons .

Oxidizing agents are the agents which results in the loss of electrons of other substances .

Addition of oxygen to a compound results in oxidation and the compound responsible for adding oxygen is called oxidizing agent .

Removal of hydrogen from a compound results in oxidation and the compound responsible for removing hydrogen is called oxidizing agent .

Identifying reducing agents .

↪ Reduction is a reaction which involves the gain of electrons .

Reducing agent is a substance which results in reduction by losing electrons .

Reducing agents are the agents which results in the gain of electrons of other substances .

Removal of oxygen from a compound results in reduction and the compound responsible for removing oxygen is called reducing agent .

Addition of hydrogen to a compound results in reduction and the compound responsible for adding hydrogen is called reducing agent .

Examples to explain :

Cu^{2+}+2e^-\rightarrow Cu

This is an example of reduction because there is addition of electrons .

Cl^--1e^-\rightarrow Cl

This is an example of oxidation reaction because there is removal of electrons .

CO_2+H_2\rightarrow CO+H_2O

This an example of reaction where both oxidation and reduction reaction occurs and this type of reaction is called redox reactions .

CO_2 is a reducing agent because it loses oxygen to form CO .

CO is the reduced product .

H_2 is an oxidizing agent because it gains oxgyen to form H_2O

H_2O is the oxidized product .
