it's a very good question that has been asked actually when the single block of wood is made to go in the water because of the upthrust force being less dense than water it comes to the top and floats in water in such a way that most of its part of its body remains submerged in water but when some holes are placed in it it would float on water with its whole body out as air is less denser than water and we had created the hollow spaces which contain air now it will floats on the water with a hole of its body above the water And the density of the block has changed on drilling holes it has become less than before
