The mucosal layer of stomach contains 3 types of cells in which parietal/oxyntic cells secrete hcl. the ph of stomach is acidic due to two reasons

1)the stomach cells secrete hcl

2)PEPSIN an enzyme which breaks down proteins into proteoses and peptones can only be activated at high ph. it remains in inactive form at low ph
