Earthquakes stop SOME clocks.
Any clock which is smashed will, of course, stop working. Fortunately not all clocks are smashed.
Your wristwatch will likely NOT stop during an earthquake, neither will that battery-powered WWV clock on your kitchen wall stop.
On tghe other hand that grandfather clock in the hall might stop because it is regulated by a pendulum, and the movement of the quake could stop that pendulum.
Etc.

Most earthquakes take the form of compression waves that travel laterally along the surface of the earth resulting is a rapid back and forth motion. This movement if in line with the swing of the pendulum can do one of two things, either itcan constructively interfere with the swing and essentially make it swing further, or it can destructively interfere with it and cause it to swing a lot less. Since the movements of the ground are sooo much faster than theperiod of the pendulum they tend to just disrupt its natural periodic movement. Oncethe swing falls below the point where it can trigger the escapement the clock will stop.
