A confluence, where two or more bodies of water meet together, usually refers to the joining of tributaries. The opposite to a tributary is a distributary, a river or stream that branches off from and flows away from the main stream. Distributaries are most often found in river deltas.

The small rivers which empty themselves in the big river, are called as tributaries of the big river. The river after the confluence is identified by the name of big river.

Eg. Yamuna river meets Ganges at allahabad and the river after the confluence is Ganges, not Yamuna. So, Yamuna is tributary of Ganges.

And , the distributary is the stream of river, which splits from main river and takes another path and identified by different name than that of original river.

Eg. The river Hooghly separates from Ganges and meets the sea by different path. So, it is distributary of Ganges.

The river Ganges and Brahmaputra meet each other, but no one is tributary of other one bacause

There is no any small and big river. Both rivers are long and wide. The name of river after confluence is not same as any one of them ( It is Meghana).

I hope my answer help to u and right
