Cost of notebook = 2*cost of pen [given].

Cost of pen = y [given].
Cost of notebook = x [given].

Substituting the values in the statement:

x = 2y.
x-2y =0

This is the linear equation to be obtained.

If x = 2, y =1 [2=2y, y=2/2=1].

If x=10, y=5 [10=2y, y=10/2=5].

We can even say that:

 \frac{x}{2} = y
x/2-y = 0.
