Roads are essential to our everyday lives. We all use them in some way, by driving, riding, walking or travelling as a passenger, and we depend on them to obtain goods and services.
Unfortunately, this comes at a price, which includes people being killed and injured. However, road deaths and injuries are not inevitable. The last few decades have demonstrated that effective and comprehensive road safety strategies can reduce the number of people killed or injured on the road, despite increasing traffic levels.
Great Britain now has one of the best road safety records in the world - but with around five people still dying on Britain's roads every day there is much more to be done.

Ten years ago, author Ravinder Singh lost his then girlfriend in a car crash, an incident that compelled him to write his bestselling debut novel I Too Had a Love Story. And then three years ago, tragedy struck him again when his father lost his right leg in a similar accident. Every day I read about lives lost on Indian roads, he says. As per official data, this nation witnesses five lakh crashes on road, leading to at least 1.5 deaths. This has to come down. I believe people have become immune to somebody preaching them road safety. We have to do so in a new way, and storytelling, movies and art are good ways to bring in change. True to his word, Singh is using the means of storytelling, in his latest novel Will You Still Love Me? to focus on the dangers of not following traffic rules.
Suffice to say, without spoiling the plot, that the couple at the centre of the novel Rajveer Saini from Patiala and Lavanya Gogoi from Shillong are forever changed due to one mishap on the road.
