When power is shared among the organs of the Government or levels of the government, it is called power sharing.


The idea of power sharing has emerged in opposition to the notions of undivided political power. In a democracy, everyone has a voice in the shaping of public policies.


It is desirable as it makes people more powerful. It reduces the possibilities of conflict between different social groups.

Power sharing is the very spirit of democracy.

In a democracy people have a right to be consulted on how they are to be governed through participation, they acquire a stake in the system. Thus, it is obvious that power sharing makes us more powerful.

→ power sharing means sharing/distribution of powers between different organs of government i.e legislature, executive,judiciary.

»there are two reasons which makes power sharing desirable:

★ Prudential reason:

» brings out better outcome

»it helps to reduce the possibility of conflict between social groups

» ensure stability of political order

★ moral reason

» it is very spirit of democracy

» people have a right to be consulted on how to be governed

» people participate in government
