Convert the time to hours:

96 mins = 96 ÷60 = 1.6 hour

120 mins = 120 ÷ 60 = 2 hours

Let the speed of the boat in still water be x km/h

Upstream = ( x - 1 ) km/h

Downstream = ( x + 1) km/h

Distance = Speed x Time

Upstream:

Distance = (x - 1) (2 ) = 2x - 2

Downstream:

Distance = (x + 1) (1.6) = x + 1.6

Since the distance for upstream and downstream is the same:

x + 1.6 = 2x - 2

0.4x = 3.6

x = 9 km/h

Answer: The speed of the boat in still water is 9 km/h
