Laterite is a soil and rock type rich in iron and aluminium and is commonly considered to have formed in hot and wet tropical areas. Nearly all laterites are of rusty-red coloration, because of high iron oxide content. They develop by intensive and prolonged weathering of the underlying parent rock.Laterite or lateritic soil remains one of the best natural materials to be used in compressed earth bricks, because, it is generally well graded soil that combines both cohesive (silt and clay) and the cohesionless (sands and gravels) parts of a soil. The laterite soils are commonly found in Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh and the hilly areas of Orissa and Assam. Soil Colour: Reddish brown in colour due to the presence of iron oxide. There are three basic types of soil: sand, silt and clay. But, most soils are composed of a combination of the different types.
