Hydrogen is not used in all rockets, and those which use it, use it for only the upper stages as this fuel is most efficient at higher altitudes. The only rocket engine known to use hydrogen in first stage from the launch was the Space Shuttle.
Also, Hydrogen is stored at a very low temperature as a liquid to increase the amount that could be carried. This cold hydrogen is also used as a coolant for the rocket engine. This helps in both cooling the engine, and converting it to gaseous state before it enters the combustion chamber. Yes, it is not burnt in liquid state.
Pollution free. Since the product of combustion of hydrogen with pure oxygen is only water, there is no question of pollution of the environment. Although we can always argue that it’s manufacture, storage, and other things consume energy from sources that may be pollutng, its own combustion is carbon or particulate pollution free.
