In Mahatma Gandhi's words the active resistance meant war without violence and solution of every problem with the help of peace.'Satya' means truthand Agraha means insistence. The word to word meaning of Satyagraha is insistence for truth. This term was popularized during the Indian Movement for Independence. According to Gandhi ji, its root meaning is holding on to truth. Satyagraha is not aphysical force. According to him, a satyagrahi does inflict pain on the adversary; he does not seek his destruction. In the use of satyagraha, there is no ill-will whatsoever. Satyagraha is pure soul-force and truth is the very substance of the soul. He believed that the only effective way to resist oppression was through non-violence and peace.
