"penetrating solid materials" here means to break the barrier layers of a material and hence traveling through it.
"luminosity" is a property of emitting light.
and this is shown by some materials like ZnS because as these High energy particles (alpha , beta and gamma ) strike the atoms of the material , they excite the electrons in there outermost Orbit and various transitions takes place.
let me tell you one thing that whenever an electron comes to lower energy level or ground state , it emits some energy in form of photons thats what's seen to us .
sometimes it's in visible region , sometimes in UV ,etc.
so, the point here is when these high energy particles strike the ZnS then electrons gain energy and reach a high energy level but after a fraction of time they loss this energy while going to ground state and hence the material get illuminated.
