•As the first world war ended, the
Ottoman Turkey Empire was destroyed.
It was the muslim country, and the
muslim religious head, khalifa, was
removed.

•Meanwhile in India, Gandhiji was trying
along with other nationalists were trying
to make India free from the British
hands. But the important problem was
the miscorporation between hindus and
muslims.

•In March 1919, Gandhiji established the
Khilafat Committee in Kolkata. It was
done with the support of the Ali
brothers- Muhammed Ali and Shaukat
Ali.

•Even though Gandhiji has the intention
to support muslims, his main aim was to
unite Indians. By his act, he believed
that the hindus will follow his path, and
muslims may think that he cares about
them too.

• This is the main reason why Gandhiji
decided to join in the khilafat
movement. Eventhough his intentions
failed, he was succeeded in uniting
them for time being, when he launched
the salt satyagraha, as the salt law was
a common trouble for Indians
disregarding their religions and creed.
