Why are oceans deep?

The reason that the ocean is “so deep” is because it is only so far from the surface to the bottom. If all the ice bound freshwater was to melt that would add a couple hundred more feet to the depth. Because in the past ages, lots of water fell on Earth & all of these got collected in various depressions.

The extreme depth of the Mariana Trench and other oceanic trenches is caused by subduction - where on the boundary of two converging tectonic plates, one descends down into Earth's mantle, creating a deep trough.
