I cannot make you become an avid reader. I can only share a few things. They go as following:

Be curious: Always in a search of meaning leads you to read a lot. I was always nagged by this pit in my stomach that led me to read a lot. I always wanted to know how things worked and why the world is the way it is. It led me right to reading.
21 days Habit: It works for some and doesn’t for others. To develop a habit, physicology says, do something for 21 days consecutively and it will turn into a habit.
Start with novels: Be it sci-fi or romance, start with novels. Novels infest you with interest by their gripping plot and engaging narrative. Novels should always be the first choice to start reading. Don't start with Shakespeare or you will be asleep after 2 pages and won't pick up a book ever again. Non-fiction is what builds your knowledge but they are also dull and thick ( mostly) so leave them for later on.
Join online forums: Forums like Goodreads are great for beginners as well as avid readers. You can always see the ratings a certain book has or read reviews that will help you to choose a certain book.
I am putting down a list for you. These books are very interesting and i always recommend them to a person who wants to become a regular reader. They are a mixture of novels and non fiction.
