Stanza wise explanation of the poem "The Children's Hour."

☞Stanza 1

The poet is describing precious, golden moment which comes between day and night at the time of dusk or twilight. When it is becoming dark or when night is coming ahead. There comes a pause means freedom from the days occupation i.e., job, through which we remain occupied through the whole days comes a free time, that time is known as the children's hour.

☞Stanza 2

The hall in which author is sitting just above it, is a chamber. He hears a sound from there. He first hears a tapping sound (pitter-patter sound) of small feet also, then he hears a sound of door that is opened, and at last soft (delightful) and pleasant voices are coming.

☞Stanza 3

The poet is sitting in a hall and he can easily see the three girls named Alice having serious emotion, Allegra who is laughing and Edith with golden hair. They are descending (coming down) from the upper chamber and he can see in the lamplight i.e., light cast from a lamp.

☞Stanza 4

Poet who was the father of these three girls said that sometimes they whisper (murmured) and then they became quite but he can easily see a happiness in their eyes. He is somewhat aware of a fact that these girls will give him some sort of surprise. He was also acquaint of their planning and arrangement of that surprise, but still he tries to be very innocent because he wants to enjoy that particular moment.

☞Stanza 5

Here in this stanza poet says that all the girls gave him the surprise attack. These three girls entered his castle wall (Castle wall is a metaphor for his hall), through three doors and that doors did not have any guard. They enter the hall where poet was sitting.

☞Stanza 6

The girls ascends to the poet's turret (turret means small tower, but here it is a metaphor for poet's chair). If the poet was not able to escape or get away because that girls surrounded him and told him tightly so he was not able to go away.

☞Stanza 7

The girls eagerly started kissing their father (the poet). They were very intense and eager and it seems like they will eat him. Their arms entwine (surrounds) the poet. This event provided him of the story named "Bishop of Bingen."

➜"Bishop of Bingen" is a famous story which describes a cruel King Hatto II, who was finally punished by mice. He hid himself under a tower, located at the Rhine River, But finally he was eaten by mice.

This tower is also known as Mouse-Tower. So girls are also behaving same way as mice. He thought the girls might eat him.

☞Stanza 8

In this stanza poet is addressing a beautiful girl as blue eyed banditti (banditti means robber). That's why they have climbed up his wall because there is no match between them as they are so young and poet is so old.

☞Stanza 9

Here fortress means defensive structure. So the poet said that he will hold them and will not let them depart (go away). He said that he had a round-tower in his heart and there he will lock them means as a father he had feelings for her daughter and he loved his daughter immensely that he will lock them and will keep them forever in his heart.

☞Stanza 10
