The pre-modern world shrank greatly in the 16th century because:-

1. Europeans found a sea route to Asia and successfully crossed the Western Oceans to go to the Americas.

2. For years, the Indian Ocean had known a bustling trade and India was central to these trade flows. However, now the Europeans redirected some of these flows towards themselves.

3. The Europeans sustained themselves and improved their livestyles through the resources from the Americas.

4. The Americas had great agricultural and mineral stocks. Precious metals like silver were mined in Mexico and Peru for Europeans.

5. The Spanish and Portuguese conquest of the Americas further strengthened the European's power over the Americas. The colonisers wiped out entire communities of Native American people using germs and diseases that they carried on their person, thereby paving the way for their own gain.

Hope it is clear :)
