Our constitution was ratified on 26 november 1949. It contains 12 schedules. The constitution is very long and detailed documents. values that inspired and guided the freedom struggle are incorporated in the constitution. It generates a degree of trust and co-ordination that is necessary for different kinds of people to live together in our country. The indian constitution lays down a procedure gor choosing persons to govern the country. It specifies how the government will be constituted and who will have power to take which decisions. The indian constitution needs to be amended quite regularly to keep it updated.Though we have borrowed many features from the constitution of other countries , we have not accepted them as they are . we have modified those provisions to suit our needa hence , altogether new provisions have been created and assimilated in the indian constitution. It provides for universal adult franchise as a basis of elections to the lok sabha and the state legislative assemblies.Drafting committee and constituent assembly was made. first some basic principles were decided and then a drafting committee under the chairmanship of dr. br Ambedkar prepared a draft constitution for discussion. the discussion of the draft constitution took place clause by clause . the members of the drafting committee completed the work in 114 days spread over three years. more than two thousand constitutional amendments were made . every document presented and every work spoken in the constituent assembly has been recorded and preserved.
