Raman Effect :

When a strong beam of visible or uv light illuminates a gas, liquid or a transparent solid then small fraction of light is scattered in all directions.

The spectrum of the scattered light is found to have lines of same frequencies as incident beam. The change in frequencies have certain weak lines This production of additional new lines is called as Raman Effect.

The displacement of lines are independent of frequencies of later. If an another light source with a different line spectrum is used then another Raman lines are obtained for the same scattering substance. However the displacement from exciting lines are the same.

Hence Raman displacements are the characteristics of the scattering substance.
