✔Green revolution is the gradual improvement in agricultural practice that takes place from 1940 to 1970s.

✔This revolution has taken place through several researches, developments and acquiring new technologies.

✔Farmers acquire new, advanced and time saving techniques and also used high yield varieties of seeds which increase the rate of production and quality of crops that also improved their way as well as quality of living.

✔Green revolution not only harvested crops but also created job for agricultural workers as well as industrial workers.

✔This also reduced the level of poverty to some extent.

✴What are merits and demeeits of green revolution?

Merits of green revolution are:-

✔Compared to the traditional seeds, the HYV seeds promised to produce much greater amounts of grain on a single plant.

✔As a result, the same piece of land would now produce far larger quantities of food grains than was possible earlier.


Demerits of green revolution are:-

✔An increase in rural to urban migration.

✔Rural Poverty have been caused.

✔The fertilisers and machinery was often too expensive for farmers.

✔Many people were made unemployed by the introduction of machinery.

Green revolution refers to the introduction of High yielding variety (HYV) of seeds and increased use of fertilizer and irrigation methods. It took place during the 1960s especially 1965onwards. It was aimed at providing increase in production to make India self-sufficient in food grains.


Merits : 1. Higher Yield. 2. Machines made for ploughing harvesting easy. 3. Surplus food can be sold to earn more. 4. Pests and insects controlled by pesticides and insecticides. 5. Good irrigation enhances production. Demerits : 1. Loss of fertility with use of chemicalfertilizers. 2. Use of tube wells reduced the water table. 3. Chemical fertilizers polluted ground water. 4. Kills bacteria and micro organism helpful fossil. 5. Excessive use of fertilizers makes soil alkaline and unfit for cultivation.
