there are various reasons for poverty.Some of them are:
Colonial rule:India went through a long phase of low economic development under the British colonial administration. The policy of colonial government ruined traditional handicrafts and discouraged development in industries like textiles.
High school growth of population: The rapid growth of population particularly along the poor are considered one of the major cause behind poverty. Poor people are illiterate and have ignorant of birth control.Morever they consider male child as an asset ,that is;as a source of security and source of income in old age.

a typical cases of poverty are:
urban case.
33 year old ram works as a daily wage labourer in a wheat flour mill near ranchi.he manages to earn Rs.1500 a month when he finds employement .which is not often.the money is not enough to sustain his family of 6. he has to send money home to his old parents who live in village nearby ranchi. his father is also a landless famer who depends on his sons.
ram saran lives in a one room rented home in a crowded basti. in the outskirts of the city.it is a temporary shack built of bricks and clay tittles.
his wife devi works as a parttime job as a maid in few houses and earn 800 montly.
they manage a meagre meal of dal and rice twice a day.his elder son works as a helper ina tea shop.and ewarns monthly 200 Rs while his 10 year old daughter takes care of the younger siblings.none of the other children go to school.they have only 2 pairs of hand- me -down clothes each.new ones are brought when the old one becomes unwearable.shoes are luxury.the younger kids are undernourished.they have no access to healthcare when they fall ill.
