sprinkler work on force created by water . grass lawn is too large to supply water in fast way if there is large amount of water is supplied then lawn will become messy.
there is small fan like object which rotate due to the pressure exerted by water being supplied

It is based on the Newton's third law of motion. As soon as the water comes out from the nozzle of the sprinkler, an equal and opposite reaction force acts on the nozzle. Due to this reaction force, the sprinkler starts rotating.
