Give reason for the following:

(a) In morning/evening Sunset appears red, In noon sun appears white.

(b) Danger signals are red in colour

(c) Sky appears black to astronaut in space

a Due to refraction of light

See Blue Skies and Red Sunsets for more details. Well This phenomenon is due to dispersion of light by the atmosphere. Since at noon sun is overhead thus sunlight travels less distance in atmosphere resulting in less dispersion and you see the sun in almost white color.

b Red colour can be seen more clearly from a distance.

c Sky is actually black. We see it as blue because of refraction
