The Bastille was a prison in Paris, France. It was destroyed during the French Revolution on 14 July 1789. It was attacked by rebels from the "third estate" (the people). This event is considered the beginning of the French Revolution.

On this day in 1789, Parisians stormed the Bastille, a fortress-prison that held political prisoners jailed by the royal government of Louis XVI. ... The taking of the Bastille signaled the beginning of the French Revolution, and thus became a symbol of the collapse of the ancien régime.

People hated bastille as it stood for the despotic power of the king.

-When the National assembly was busy at drafting constitution, people of france greatly suffered.

-A bad harvest with increased bread prices angered the people who stood long in queues.

-Those people stormed the shops and at the same time king ordered troops to move into paris.

So, the angry crowd stormed and destroyed bastille.

Its fragments were sold in markets.
