➡◆India has a variety of geo - physical features and landforms , viz- mountains, plateaus, plains, deserts, coastal plains and islands . These are the result of long geologically processes during millions of years

Formation of geological features and landforms of India can be easily understood by the PLATE TECTONIC THEORY

This theory discusses the various processes which are responsible for the formations of these landform features

The movement of the plates can be classified into three types : convergent boundary , divergent boundary and transform boundary

The oldest landmass was a part of Gondwana land which included India , Australia, south Africa , south America and Antarctica as one single land mass

The major physiographic divisions of India are - the Himalayas, the northern plains , the Peninsular plateau , the Indian desert , the coastal plains and the islands

The Himalayas mountain s are young fold mountains lactated in the northern part of India . They have the highest mountain peaks of the world

The Himalayas consists of three parallel ranges in its longitudinal extent , these are : Himadri or inner Himalaya s , Himachal or Lesser Himalayas and Shiwaliks.

The northern plains are formed by the alluvial soil deposited by the Himalaya rivers . They extend over a large area of India and can be divided into the Indus , the Ganga and the Brahmaputra plains

The peninsular plateau is a tableland composed of crystalline , ingeous and and metamorphic rocks
It is one of the oldest landmass of the earth .

It is separated from the coastal plains by Eastern and Western ghats . It consists of two broad divisions : Central highland and Deccan pleatue .

The Indian desert is the vast sandy stretch of plain located in the western part of the country .

The coastal plains are the narrow strips of the plains running along with coasts of India . These are wider along with the Eastern coast than , the western coast .

Lakshadweep ,located in the Arabian sea , and Andaman and Nicobar , located in the bay of Bengal , are temwo group of islands in the Indian union . Lakshadweep is composed of small coral islands
