●Electricity flows in two ways: either in an alternating current (AC) or in a direct current (DC).
● The difference between AC and DC lies in the direction in which the electrons flow.
● In DC, the electrons flow steadily in a single direction, or "forward."
●dc is not used in home while ac is used.
●ac is used in home because the high voltages from the power station can be easily reduced to a safer voltage for use in the house whereas that cannot be done by ac.
●AC also has some useful properties, such as being able to convert voltage levels with a single component (a transformer), which is why AC was chosen as the primary means to transmit electricity over long distances.
ANSWER
AC is the short form for Alternating Current. The current that changes its polarity with time is called an alternating current. The current in your home’s main line is an alternating current.
DC is the short form for Direct Current. The current that stays constant with time is called direct current. Current from a battery is direct current.
Some differences:
AC can be transported over long distance at high voltage and low current so as minimizing the ohmic loss in heat while the same is not efficient for DC.
AC can be used as carrier waves for signal transmission purposes without the need of oscillators. While DC can’t be used for such purpose.
AC needs rectification before use in any electronic appliance while DC can be directly used with electronic components without the need of rectification.
