Dogs are descended from wolves. Wolves used to live and hunt in packs. Every pack had an "alpha" ie a leader who the others would follow. Even though dogs have been domesticated for many centuries that instinct to follow a pack leader remains. When you adopt a dog it sees you as its "alpha" and obeys your commands. This behaviour isn't noticed in cats, because the modern cat has predecessors who would prefer to hunt alone, as evidenced by other members of the cat family that are alive today (tigers, panthers and the like).
