Project Tiger:
Tigers are pride of India. Do you know that two thirds of world's tigers are in India. Since many centuries tigers in India had been the targets of hunters, as a matter of pride, and of poachers as means of living. As of thousands and thousands of tigers were reduced to just 1, 827 in 1972.
Indian Tiger sanctuaries, forest department and ministry, National Tiger Conservation Authority and world organizations celebrate International Tiger Day on July 29h every year. Tiger is the carrier of Goddess Kali and Ayyappa swamy. Tiger is treated as very sacred. Bengal tigers are very special.
Project Tiger started in India to prevent their killing and to increase their population. Project Tiger's initiative helps conservation of tigers and ecosystem, God's nature and also to entertain children and animal lovers too. So in 1973 around 40 thousand sq km reserve parks and sanctuaries are set up in about 40 locations in India. They are protected. Madhya Pradesh had the highest number of tigers. Now project tiger enabled Karnataka to overtake MP in tiger population.
Tiger population has become 1, 706 in 2011, 2, 206 in 2014 and now 3, 891 in 2016. Between 1972 and 2006 the population reduced from 1,827 to 1,411. But the strict enforcement of Tiger preservation Act 1972 (or Wild Life Protection Act) has helped the growth.
National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) was set up in 2005 by the Prime Minister of India. It was to take a better care of tigers. It was necessary as per the Tiger Task Force which did research and gave its report.
Initiatives:
Reorganization of Project tiger and Tiger Reserves of India.
Close monitoring of the tigers and their movements;
Caring for tiger cubs in their infancy;
Explaining the need for protection of tigers to villagers and tribals near forests;
Harsh and quick punishment to the criminals;
Arrangement of closed circuit tv cameras in the forests;
Transparency in management of the parks;
Regular monitoring and reporting of tiger population and their status;
Promoting the population of herbivorous animals in the tiger kingdoms
Responsible and careful monitoring of the parks by IAS & IFS officials regularly;
additionally, efforts to preserve ecosystem and biodiversity in India. Visits to national parks by international journalists, media and officials of international organizations.
attention given by the government towards the initiative.
A postal stamp is also released to promote project tiger.
Outstation petrol pumps were set up.
Communication devices were set up in the parks at many locations.
Villages close to or in the middle of reserve parks have been relocated to safer places.
Water facilities have been increased. Deforestation is reduced to nil.
Fire protection has been arranged so that fire damage is minimized.
