Answer:

Let A and B be two pipes.

So the quantity of water filled by pipe A in 1 hour is =1/A

and that of pipe B is =1/B.

Thus in 1 hour the quantity of water filled by both pipes is= 1/A + 1/B

It takes 12 hours by pipes to fill the pool

So 1/A + 1/B = 1/12------------(1)

In 4 hours the quantity of water filled by pipe A = 4/A

in 9 hours the quantity of water filled by pipe B = 9/B

Given in the question half is filled so

4/A + 9/B = 1/2-------------(2)

Let 1/A = x & 1/B = y

From (1) and (2) we have,

x + y = 1/12-------------(3)

4 x + 9 y = 1/2----------(4)

Multiply eqn (3) by 4 and eqn (4) by 1 we get,

4 x + 4 y = 1/3

4 x + 9 y = 1/2

Subtracting we get

- 5y = 1/3-1/2

-5y = -1/6

5y = 1/6

y = 1/30

1/B = 30

So we have B = 30

Thus, the second pipe alone fills in 30 hours

Substituting y = 1/30 in eqn (3) we have,

x + 1/30 = 1/12

x = 1/12-1/30

x =  \frac{5 - 2}{60}

x = 3/60

x = 1/20

1/A = 1/20

A = 20

So it will take 20 hours , if the first pipe alone fills the pool.
