Distinction Between Crystalline and Amorphous Solids =

Crystalline Solids.

1. The crystalline solids have definite characteristic shape.

2. They have regular arrangement of constituent particles. they are said to exhibit long range order.

3. They have sharp and characteristic melting point.

4. When cut with a sharp edged tool, they split into two pieces and the newly generated surface are plain and smooth.

5. They have definition and characteristic enthalpy of fusion.

6. They are anisotropic and have different physical properties in different directions.

7. They are true solids.

Example = Copper, silver, iron, common salt, zinc sulphide etc.

Amorphous Solids.

1. The amorphous solids have irregular shape.

2. They donot have any regular arrangement of the constituent particles. They may have short range order.

3. They donot have sharp melting point. They gradually soften over a range of temperature.

4. When cut with a sharp edged tool they cut into two pieces with irregular surfaces

5. They donot have definite enthalpy of fusion.

6. They are isotropic and have same physical properties in all directions.

7. They are pseudo solids and supercooled liquids.

Example = Glass, rubber, plastics etc.
