Earthquakes occur in the crust and upper mantle, down to a depth of about 500 miles. The mantle is the source of the molten magma that feeds volcanoes and drives continental drift/plate tectonics, both of which cause earthquakes. ... The mantle is everything below the crust down to the core.

Earthquakes occur in the crust and upper mantle, down to a depth of about 500 miles. The mantle is the source of the molten magma that feeds volcanoes and drives continental drift/plate tectonics, both of which cause earthquakes. Since earthquakes aren’t really centered in the mantle, it is probably better to call the mantle the “mother” of earthquakes, though they can form from shallower processes, like slumping, as well as from asteroid impacts.
