The religion followed by Vietnamese was a mixture of Buddhism, Confucianism and a set of local practises.

The Christianity introduced by the French missionaries was intolerant of this easygoing attitude. From the eighteenth century, many religious movements were hostile to Western presence.

One of the earliest movement was Scholar's Revolt of 1868, which was led by the officials of the Imperial Court angered by the spr of Catholicism , French rule and Christianity.

The early French Missionaries had been active in winning converts since the seventeenth century and had converted some 3,00,000 till eighteenth century.

Hundreds and thousands of Christians were killed in this revolt. The French suppressed the movement but it continued to inspire people to rise against French.

Another such movement was Hoa Hao Movement led by Huynh Phu So.

He was said to have performed miracles and helped the poor.
