Fench started these infrastructure projects to support the agriculture and irrigation work so the prodictivity goes up and they get more profit.

Main reason was to serve their mother land and also they thought that it is the duty of advanced European countries to civilise backward ones.

French motive behind building canals and draining lands in Mekong delta region was to increase the rice cultivation in Vietnam and help Vietnam to sell their produce in international market. The French were successful in their motive i.e. Vietnam became the third largest producer of rice in the international markets. The French did this all to civilise the so called "backward" Vietnamese.
