2)The task of beautifying the original copy of the Constitution of India was given to Nandalal Bose (then the Principal of Kala Bhavan Shanti Niketan in Shanti Niketan) by the Congress.[3][4] Bose set out to complete this task with the help of his students, one of whom was Dinanath Bhargava, then 21 years old.[5] Bose was keen to include the Lion Capital of Ashoka into the opening pages of the constitution. Wanting the lions to be depicted realistically, he chose Bhargava who studied the behaviour of the lions at the Kolkata Zoo.[6] On 26 January 1950, it was adopted as the State Emblem of India.

The National Emblem of India

An Overview

The National emblem of India is the official emblem of the Republic of India adopted by the Government of India on 26 January 1950. The emblem has four Asiatic lions standing in a circular position with their back against each other and the Asoka Chakra encrypted on the platform in which the lions stand [also called the abacus]. A bull, an elephant and a horse are also inscribed on the abacus.

The meaning of the emblem

The four Asiatic lions represent four principles confidence, power, courage and pride. The Asoka Chakra in the middle of the abacus is the Wheel of life and each of the 24 spokes refer to the principles of life. The bull symbolizes hard work and the horse symbolizes speed and loyalty. The motto - Satyameva Jayate is written below the National emblem which means Truth alone truimphs. These all refer to the principles and ethics each citizen must follow and behold to contribute to the nation.

History and Discovery

The National Emblem of India is also known as the Lion Capital of Asoka. It was originally part of the Asoka Pillar, situated in Sanchi. It was established by the great ruler Asoka of the Mauryan Empire. Even though the pillar is still located there, the emblem was shifted and placed in a museum. The Emblem must have been an official emblem of the Emperor and must have symbolised Dharma.

It was discovered by an amateur archaeologist, F. O. Oertel during excavation at the Sanchi site.

Knowledge Bytes:

→ You must have seen only three lions and the etchings of horse and a bull in the emblem. This is due to the 2D printing available in those days.

→ If you notice a bit more, you can see the sides of two more Asoka chakras. The etching of the elephant and the statue of the other Asiatic lion is located behind this.

→ The Asoka pillar was accidently discovered while looking for remains of the Mauryan Empire.

→ Even though we have the Asoka chakra, it was a mistake! A large Dharma chakra with 32 spokes was actually meant for the emblem but the smaller chakra with 24 spokes was mistakenly taken.

→ There was also etchings of some lotus blooms but they were cancelled when the emblem was created.

→ The lion capital was discovered in a broken form. Certain changes had to be done to make it the national emblem.
