The idea of a giant ocean wave being caused by an earthquake on the ocean floor is a bit farfetched for some students. So, it helps to show them how this mechanism can work with a build-it-yourself model. All you need is a clear container of some sort (something medium-sized, like a tupperware container works best), some water (throw some food coloring in to make it stand out better), some thick plastic wrap, and some strong rubber bands. Fill the container with water, cover it with the plastic, and secure the plastic with rubber bands. Gently flip the container over, wait for the water to settle, then hit the plastic on the bottom to produce a wave on the top of the water in the container. Students will be able to visually understand what is happening during a tsunami. You can have one apparatus set up as a demonstration, or you can have student groups create their own. Just be prepared to get wet if the rubber band snaps
