Alveoli are the small sac like structures which are the ultimate sites of gas exchange.

Herd the exchange of gases(oxygen and carbon dioxide) takes place between the alveoli in the lungs and the pulmonary capillaries by the process of diffusion along the concentration gradient.

To facilitate this diffusion process,

(i) The alveoli is made of a thin single layer of squamous epithelium and also the pulmonary capillaries consists of a thin single cell thick endothelium.

(ii) Also the alveoli are arranged in a manner which maximizes their area of cross section to maximize the process of diffusion.

Answer:

The exchange of gases in plants occurs via tiny pores found in the leaves known as stomata (or stoma - singular). These are surrounded by specialised cells known as guard cells, that helps in opening and closing of stomata for the exchange of gases.

In humans, alveoli are the sites for the exchange of gases. They are found in the mammalian lungs.
