what is gram staining?..

it was done by Christian Gram

he classified bacteria on the basis of cell wall thickness

there are two types of bacteria

1 Gram positive

it take crystal violet stain and iodine

amount of peptidoglycan ( constituent of cell wall) is more

thickness = 20 - 80 um

lipids are absent

mesosoms are present and prominent

rarely cause disease

ex = lactobacillus

2 gram negative bacteria

don't take stain from Crystal violet and it takes stain from safranin solution

amount of prptidoglycan is less

thickness = 10 - 20 um

lipids are present

mesosomes are absent or less prominent

generally cause disease

because = they have high resistances against antibiotics and have more power

ex = e. coli

it is enough from the neet and AIIMS point of view
