A longitudinal wave travels through a medium in the form of compressions and rarefactions.

________________________________________

\underline{Compression} :->
A compression is a region of the medium in which particles are compressed i.e. particles come closer. The distance between the particles becomes less than the normal distance between them.

\underline{Rarefaction} :->

A rarefaction is a region of the medium in which particles are rarefied i.e. particles get farther apart. The distance between the particles becomes mate than the normal distance between them.

_________________________________________

The distance between two consecutive compressions or two consecutive rarefactions is called vas wavelength of the wave.
