John Mathai was the first railway minister of independent India.

Asaf Ali was the Indian railway minister just before the independence. He had served in the capacity from September 2, 1946 to August 14, 1947. After the independence, rather on the day of independence (August 15, 1947), John Mathai was sworn in as the first Railway Minister of independent India. He went on to serve in Nehru's cabinet till September 22, 1948. He was replaced by N Gopalaswami in 1948 and Gopalaswami was followed by Lal Bahadur Shastri, who later became the Prime Minister of India. Till date, there have been 39 Railway Ministers in India.
