Let the cost of the pen be rupee x.

And The cost of pencil be rupee y.

So,

37x + 53y = 320 --------------(1)

& 53x + 37y = 400 -----------(2)

Now,

Adding equation 1 and 2. we get,

90x + 90y = 720

=> 90 ( x + y) = 90 × 8

=> x + y = 8. ---------------(3)

Now, Subtracting equation 1 and 2. we get,

16x - 16y = 80

=> 16 ( x - y) = 16 × 5

=> x - y = 5.--------------(4)

By Elimination Method,

2x = 13

=> x = 6.5

Now, Putting x = 6.5 in equation 3. we get,

y = 8 - x

=> y = 8 - 6.5

=> y = 1.5

Hence,

Cost of 1 pen is Rupee 6.5

And Cost of 1 pencil is Rupee 1.5
