We know that,

(a+b)²=a²+b²+2ab

Let we suppose,

x = a

1/x = b

Therefore,

(x+1/x)²=x²+1/x²+2 ( x and 1/x are cancelled out )

(x+1/x)²= 11+2

(x+1/x)²=13

Hence,

x+1/x = ±√13 ( required answer )
