Hey there !

To know how to number the carbon atoms in a chain, you must first get to know some basic rules given by the IUPAC.

According to the IUPAC, the carbon having the higher priority group must get the number 1.

Now the question of selecting the highest priority group arises in your mind. Well for that you need to go through the order in the attachment.

Second after numbering it 1, look for the chain where you can generate more number of carbons.

For e.g.

CH₃-CH₂-CH₂-CH₂-COOH  , CH₃-CH-CH₂-COOH

                                                     ( CH₃ )

Here the CH₃ is attached to CH.

Now if you give CH₂ the number 1, then you get 4 Carbons in the first case. Whereas in the second case, only 3 Carbon chain is the longest.

Therefore if such a case arises you must always choose the longest chain, that is the 4 Carbon chain for numbering.

These are the basic rules of numbering a carbon chain. For more detailed explanation, do read your prescribed Chemistry textbook.

Note: In this example, I have considered different cases of two compounds. But while numbering these 2 cases can arise in a single compound. During that time you can apply these rules.

Have a great day :)
