It was originally placed on the top of the Ashoka pillar at a significant Buddhist site of Sarnath by Emperor Ashoka in around 250 B.C. The pillar is often called as 'Ashoka Column'

But the pillar is now in it's original place but the lion capital is now in the Sarnath museum in Uttar pradesh,India.
