The devastation earthquakes cause is vast.

  • The actual earthquake
  • Broken buildings
  • Destroyed infrastructure
  • Possible destruction to airports
  • Could cause destruction/damage to power stations, including nuclear power stations (though they're pretty sturdy)
  • Could cause a tsunami, land/rock slide or avalanche, depending on where the earthquake originated
  • Could collapse mines trapping workers
  • Destruction of communication systems

Basically, the earthquake itself (depending on how strong it is) causes a massive variety of destruction.

The aftermath

  • Spread of disease since sanitation is hindered
  • Shortage of water, sanitation and food
  • Possible breakdown of communications
  • An earthquake can actually cause another earthquake.

To wrap it all up, earthquakes cause massive destruction, varying from infrastructure to lowering the quality of life the following days, which in turn could spread disease and illness.
