a) Earth's largest animal, the blue whale can eat some 4 to 8 tons of krill per day.

b) The blue whale is found alone or in small groups in all oceans, but populations in the Southern Hemisphere are much larger. In the Northern Hemisphere, blue whales can be seen regularly in the Gulf of St. Lawrence and off the coasts of Monterey, California, and Baja California, Mexico.

c) The blue whale has been called the sulfur-bottom whale because of the yellowish underside of some individuals that is reminiscent of the pale yellow colour of that chemical element; this coloration is imparted by certain algae (diatoms) living on the whale's body.

d) Blue whales are among Earth's longest-lived animals. Their average lifespan is estimated at around 80 to 90 years.
