Silkworms go through four stages of development, as do most insects: egg, larva, pupa and adult: the adult (imago) stage is the silkworm moth. The larva is the silkworm caterpillar. Since the silkworms (that is the larvae stage) grow so much they must shed their skin four times while growing.
A pupa is the life stage of some insects undergoing transformation. The pupal stage is found only in holometabolous insects, those that undergo a complete metamorphosis, going through four life stages: embryo, larva, pupa and imago. During the pupal stage, only in the case of Bombyx mori, they produce silk.
